What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are special, resin-like materials used to cover fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth in order to prevent tooth decay. Application of sealant is recommended for children and teenagers shortly after the chewing surface of a growing tooth has grown beyond the gum.

Dental sealants can only be applied before a tooth has been affected by tooth decay and caries has developed. Applying dental sealant is most important for teeth with deep fissures such as molars, which start to appear around the age of 6, but seeing as each clinical case is different, a dentist should be consulted about the need for applying dental sealants. When applied, sealants can remain in place from 1 up to 10 years depending on occlusion, diet, and brushing habits of each individual. It is recommended to visit a dentist regularly to control the state of sealants on your teeth.

It is important to remember that dental sealants help protect, but do not prevent tooth decay. It is still necessary to brush your teeth twice a day!
